Smartoptics Achieves IBM Qualification for SmartOS 13.0.2, Strengthening Mainframe Connectivity for Mission-Critical Environments

Qualification supports enhanced timing synchronisation and expanded deployment options across IBM mainframe environments.

Independent Data Solutions (IDS), the sole authorised distributor of Smartoptics in Australia and New Zealand, today announced that Smartoptics has successfully achieved IBM qualification for SmartOS Release 13.0.2, creating new opportunities for organisations operating mission-critical IBM mainframe environments and enabling smoother upgrade pathways for existing customers.

The qualification is particularly significant for organisations operating high-performance environments where precise timing and data synchronisation are essential for business continuity and transaction integrity. Financial institutions, large enterprises and organisations using geographically distributed IBM environments can now upgrade Smartoptics infrastructure while maintaining support for critical IBM protocols and applications.

The qualification validates the Smartoptics DCP Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer (DWDM) Platform running SmartOS Release 13.0.2 across IBM Z, Parallel Sysplex and GDPS environments. It includes support for key protocols used for Server Time Protocol (STP) messaging and long-reach applications.

For IDS customers already operating Smartoptics line systems within IBM environments, this creates a practical and low-risk upgrade path.

For organisations operating IBM mainframes supporting financial systems and high-volume transaction environments, timing precision is critical. Synchronisation between the optical transport layer and IBM mainframe systems directly influences the performance and integrity of applications such as FICON-based environments and mission-critical transaction processing.

The new qualification strengthens this capability by ensuring synchronisation timing between Smartoptics DWDM infrastructure and IBM mainframes is optimised for these environments.

The release extends support across existing and emerging Smartoptics platforms, including:

  • Existing DCP-M40-PAM4 models
  • Existing DCP-1610 systems
  • New DCP-M40-MSO platforms
  • Additional support for 25Gb Coupling Express Long Reach (CE LR) using DCP-108 transponders

The qualification also introduces support for transmission distances of up to 100km across supported environments, giving organisations greater flexibility in building resilient and geographically distributed infrastructure.

“As organisations continue modernising critical infrastructure, maintaining timing integrity and application performance across distributed environments becomes increasingly important. The IBM qualification for SmartOS 13.0.2 reinforces Smartoptics’ capability to support these high-performance environments while giving customers the flexibility to expand and evolve their networks with confidence.” said Iain Ashley, Chief Technology Officer of Independent Data Solutions

The announcement also aligns with growing enterprise requirements for scalable and open optical networking architectures that support long-term investment protection without introducing unnecessary operational complexity.

By extending compatibility across both existing and new Smartoptics platforms, organisations can continue leveraging current infrastructure investments while preparing for future growth.

For IDS customers, this means greater flexibility in supporting:

  • High-performance financial transaction environments
  • Geographically dispersed IBM deployments
  • Long-reach optical connectivity
  • Mainframe modernisation initiatives
  • Future expansion to higher-capacity services

As organisations continue modernising core infrastructure, the ability to integrate high-performance optical networking into IBM environments without disrupting existing operations becomes increasingly valuable.

IDS continues to work alongside Smartoptics to deliver open optical networking solutions that support enterprise and service provider environments across Australia and New Zealand.
